The 5 Best Mid-Century Modern Communities in Northern Virginia

The 5 Best Mid-Century Modern Communities in Northern Virginia

Mid-century modern architecture might be the perfect fit if you're looking for a unique home that inspires and speaks to your creativity. Most of these homes were designed in the late 1950s and 1960s as a way to break away from the traditional architectural designs popular in the 1940s. Many years later, these homes capture the impressive creativity and forethought of their designers like Frank Lloyd Wright and Charles Goodman. Northern Virginia is full of wonderful communities known for their mid-century modern homes. Here are five of our favorites.

Wessynton

Designed by Nicholas A. Pappas in the 1970s, this community sits on 65 acres that were previously part of the Mount Vernon estate owned by George Washington. Pappas's vision was to design homes that appeared to fit seamlessly within nature to create a feeling of privacy and seclusion. This 156-home community is truly a masterpiece.

Holmes Run Acres

One of the largest and first to be built in the area, this 365-home community sits on 122 acres owned by Herman Schmidt. Designed by the architectural team of Francis Donald Lethbridge and Nicholas Satterlee these homes are diverse and beautiful. You'll find open floor plans, exposed wood, and big glass windows. Some feature screened porches, glazed fireplaces, cathedral ceilings, and carports. The community itself offers three swimming pools, picnic and grilling areas, and hiking trails.

Truro

Developed by Miller & Smith, the 377 homes of Truro are absolutely beautiful. The community was named after Truro Parish which got it's name from Cornwall, England's mining district. You'll notice that many of the streets in Truro are named after historical people and places as well. The architectural firm of Deigert & Yerks designed several of the mid-century modern homes in Truro which boast around 3,800 square feet. The community offers a clubhouse, tennis courts, swimming pool, and 36 acres of parkland with over a mile of scenic trails.

Hollin Hills

Nestled in the heart of Alexandria, VA, Hollin Hills is an architectural masterpiece full of award-winning homes designed by Charles Goodman. Blending seamlessly with the landscape, the homes effortlessly add a layer of beauty that doesn't take away from the natural environment. Ranging from 1,100 to 4,400 square feet, these homes feature walls of glass windows, geometric aesthetics, and sloping roofs. The community offers several parks and hiking trails, a swimming pool, and convenient access to Old Town Alexandria and Washington, D.C.

Lake Barcroft

Offering the quintessential blend of suburban charm and lakeside living, Lake Barcroft is the ideal destination for homebuyers seeking tranquility and recreation. Established in the city of Falls Church in the 1950s, this community now offers over 1,000 homes. Residents have access to the 135-acre private lake and its five beaches. You can bring sailboats, pontoons, and electrically or self-propelled boats to enjoy on the lake.
